  • This is the first time a Westside Creek trail has been recognized nationally and is the only Texas trail added to the inventory this year

Today, the San Antonio Parks and Recreation are celebrating the designation of the Apache Creek Greenway Trail as a National Recreation Trail by the National Park Service.

In honor of National Trail Day on June 5, Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland announced today ten new national recreation trails in eight states, adding more than 160 miles to the National Trails System. This is the first time a Westside Creek trail is recognized nationally and is the only Texas trail added to the inventory this year.

We’re thrilled that the Apache Creek Greenway Trail is now designated as a National Recreation Trail,” said Homer Garcia III, director of Parks and Recreation on Friday. “This national recognition celebrates our city’s trail system on the West Side and will, hopefully, encourage more walkers, hikers, and cyclists to explore this wonderful amenity.”

The Apache Creek Trail is unique in that it is the longest trail on the West Side at 3.7 miles and directly connects to several parks such as Elmendorf Lake Park, Cassiano Park, Escobar Park, and Amistad Park. The trail ties historic neighborhoods that embody the city’s Mexican-American and Hispanic cultures.

The Apache Creek Trail joins three other Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails (Leon Creek North, Medina River, and Salado Creek North) in the National Trails System inventory of trails and greenways recognized for excellence by the U.S. Department of the Interior. At present, approximately 57 miles of the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trail System are now designated as National Recreation Trails. The network of trails includes more than 1,300 existing trails throughout the 50 states and is a key reference for hike and bike enthusiasts across the United States.
