“I basically hired Pharaoh today,” said Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “But I told him we’re going to be meeting every single day, every single week, until you guys go home feeling like you’ve finally been heard and the change is here in San Antonio.”
Pharaoh Clark speaks at the June 4, 2020 City Council A Session.
The above words were delivered by Mayor Nirenberg on June 4th, 2020 to a crowd of protestors after a city council meeting where tensions ran in council chambers. Throughout this tumultuous forum where protestors continuously interrupted the meeting’s progress, the mayor gravitated towards a lone voice at the podium...that of activist Pharaoh Clark. Agreeing to meet with him after the City Council session, the mayor and the Uniting America Outreach activist shared words that would later evolve into a new form of political advocacy. This type of advocacy would see Nirenberg routinely meeting with Clark over the course of the past few weeks to talk about social justice advocacy and go over Clark’s list of demands for police reform in San Antonio. The activist would later be involved in further protests downtown and in the city’s Northside in front of District 10 Councilman Clayton Perry’s house.
Actor, aspiring reality TV star, socialite, activist…Pharaoh Clark (known as Jamell Clark prior to a legal name change in 2017) has worn many hats throughout his eventful life in the Alamo City. As an advocate for police reform, he is also no stranger to encounters with the officers of the San Antonio Police Department. A quick search on the County Clerk and District Clerk Court Records website turns up two pages of closed entries for offenses such as possession of marijuana, resisting arrest, evading arrest, and unlawful carrying of a weapon.
Clark is also no stranger to the San Antonio social spotlight. In a November 2018 YouTube video he appears as a reality television show star for a program called American Pharaoh. The pilot episode centers around Clark’s lavish partying lifestyle, as well as his romantic relationship with two sisters. All this drama eventually results in several fistfights between the two women, climaxing in a major highway accident.
Since that June 4th council meeting, Clark has maintained the listening ear of the mayor and city council. In addition, he has been bolstered by the San Antonio media as an upstanding resource person on matters of racial inequality and police reform. He’s also been featured on the Rivard Report’s Black San Antonio Matters Panel, the San Antonio Express-News’ profile piece on the new leaders behind the city’s Black Lives Matter movement, and KSAT.com’s article about his work with Mayor Nirenberg.
This Thursday at 6:15 PM, he will once again take the stage on The Brockcast, the successful conservative Facebook Live show hosted by former city councilman and mayoral candidate, Greg Brockhouse. Although it is unclear what their dialogue will consist of, the conversation should undoubtably be intriguing to watch.
